25 April 07 - 11:29Statewide relationship registry

The Bracks Government has promised to set up a statewide relationship registry by the end of they year. It will operate along similar lines as the set up in Tasmania, and will allow same sex couples, heterosexual couples in defacto relationships and carers to register their relationship, so they can receive legal recognition of their relationship. Rodney Croome's commentary on this decision is also really worth reading.

This is great news, and good on the Bracks Government for moving to set up the register. Hopefully more state governments will follow the Tasmanian lead in the near future.

22 April 07 - 22:20Saturday Night

I spent Saturday night in Fitzroy with some friends. We had dinner at Bimbo Deluxe and then played pool for a bit at the Red Triangle, before heading over to the Night Cat. It was all great fun (even though my dancing style was pretty sucktacular at times) .

Unfortunately, Olav couldn't make it because of an impending thesis, but we'll have to drag him along to the Night Cat once he's finally finished (even if he doen't like the jazz, he'll love the dancing).

12 April 07 - 23:54This post bought to you by the letter Y

See Alanis Morrissette's cover of the Black Eyed Peas' My Humps. It's really just a bit special. So is Sad Kermit singing the Nine Inch Nail's Hurt - which is very reminiscent of Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles, so if you're squeamish, consider yourself warned, and if you haven't seen Meet the Feebles, consider this very not safe for work (via Damien).

Speaking of the Muppets and Nine Inch Nails, check out The Nine Inch Snails.

And finally, I had no idea that Oscar the Grouch was originally orange.

06 April 07 - 18:22What's good about Good Friday

Ainsley posts eloquently on what Good Friday means to her. I'm not a Christian (I'm a non-religion specific monotheist), but her post made me reflect on Good Friday's message of sacrifice and hope in a way I haven't for years.

05 April 07 - 14:57easter break

I'm hanging out for this evening, as I really need a break, and I'm taking next Tuesday off, so I'll get 5 days in a row where I don't have to worry about going into work. We have no plans for the break as Olav's PhD thesis is due in the middle of May - so he'll be stuck working flat out on that (poor guy!). He still has a fair bit to do before it's finished. I think I'll play a really long game of Civ4 and watch some DVDs over the break. I should also get back into the gym, and I'll probably just rejoin Monash, even though they have significantly increased their prices over last year.

05 April 07 - 11:07Lyn Allison on YouTube

Australian Democrats leader, and Senator for Victoria, Lyn Allison has started to use YouTube in the lead-up to this year's federal election. I reckon her videos are well worth a look if you're interested in Australian federal politics.

The party's website also has rss feeds for her media releases, speeches and articles.

Lyn faces a real battle to get re-elected, but on the basis of her hard, and more importantly, worthwhile work in the senate, I believe she ought to get another term in the senate. It's the work done by people such as Lyn and Andrew Bartlett that makes the future of the Dems still worth fighting for.

04 April 07 - 00:53Meat cake

Someone has made a cake out of hamburger mince.

It's like something out of an episode of Friends.
Oh well, I'm sure it tastes better than canned haggis.

03 April 07 - 10:24The word is moll, not mole!

I have been wasting some time reading online forums over the last few days, and I've come to the conclusion that one of my pet hates is when some bogan calls a woman an evil mole, when they clearly mean to say moll. Arggh! It's not only sexist, it's also completely inaccurate. If you're going to insult someone, at least get it right.

07 04 07 01:00using google maps to calculate distances

I have recently found a website that calculates distances in kilometres or miles on google maps. It defaults to the US, but i have stuck in some local streets in Melbourne, and it works fine. It has been great for tracking how far I've been walking lately.

04 04 07 00:08SMH opinion piece on restricting marriage

Lisa Pryor has written an opinion piece on why some people shouldn't be allowed to marry.
Of course, I totally agree with her last sentence. (via Rodney Croome).
